The total beginner's guide to Korean skincare + our recommended routine

Korean skincare is a rabbit hole that’s pretty easy to fall into. Seeing all these flawless K-pop idols and Korean actors and actresses in the ads of the numerous Korean cosmetic brands that have set up shop here will make it easy to think “Wow, I’d love to be that dewy and flawless!”

However, it’s also pretty easy to be overwhelmed by Korean skincare. There are tons of articles about the 10 or 12 step Korean skincare routine, must-have products, the latest sheet masks, ampoules, toning pads, and more! Where will a total beginner even start?

Well, you can start by reading this article!

First of all, you do not need a 10-step routine! This can be very overwhelming for a beginner, especially if their routine just involves washing their face with soap! The most basic skincare routine will consist of 4 steps:

 The 4 essential skincare steps!

Step 1: Cleanse

Choose a gentle cleanser that’s not too stripping, but can effectively remove dirt and excess sebum. You should cleanse in the morning and the evening, after removing makeup! Cleansing will make your face squeaky clean and will prevent a number of things, such as blackheads and acne!

Tip: Choose a low-pH formula! Our skin is naturally a bit acidic, so products with high pH levels can damage our moisture barrier and skin!

Our pick: COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser (PHP 540)

The COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser is gentle on the skin, but can easily remove dirt and impurities! It contains tea tree oil to help treat acne and remove excess sebum. Drier-skinned people don’t need to worry though; the formula isn’t harsh and won’t be drying!

Step 2: Tone

Toner is the first burst of hydration for your skin! Yes, even toners for oily-skinned gals need to have some hydrating properties since moisturized skin = less oil production! Toner will also remove any trace of dirt that your cleanser might have missed, balance the skin’s pH level, and adds a layer of hydration and treatment on the skin.

Tip: Try applying toner with your hands! Apply a suitable amount on your fingers and gently pat it on your skin until fully absorbed. This will help the toner absorb better.

Our Pick: Dear Klairs Supple Preparation Toner (PHP 1,150)

The Dear Klairs Supple Preparation Toner is great for all skin types! Not only will it create the perfect canvas for your other skincare items, it will also hydrate your skin and lowers its pH level! This toner also contains Centella Asiatica and Peptides to treat breakouts and soothe the skin!

Step 3: Moisturize

A good moisturizer should have these 3 qualities:  1. Is easily absorbed, 2. Doesn’t leave a heavy or sticky feeling, and 3. Provides lasting hydration and moisture. Properly moisturized skin will make you look glowing and healthy! This would be the last step in your evening routine.

Tip: Oily-skinned people should NEVER skip moisturizer! Hydrated and moisturized skin will lead to less sebum production!

Our Pick: COSRX Oil-Free Ultra Moisturising Lotion  (PHP 1040)

This moisturizer contains 70% birch sap extract to soothe and hydrate the skin! It’s also quick absorbing and doesn’t leave a greasy residue, making it perfect for all skin types!

Step 4: SPF

The last step in your morning routine should always be sunscreen! Sunscreen is super important! The harmful rays of the sun can accelerate aging, cause dark spots, and worse, skin cancer!

Tip: Use a sunscreen that protects from both UVA and UVB rays. You can see sunscreens UVA protection rating by checking its protection rating indicated by PA+. The more plus signs you see, the stronger UVA protection you get.

Our pick: Neogen Day-Light Protection Sunscreen SPF 50 PA+++ (PHP 1,300)

The Neogen Day-Light Protection Sunscreen offers protection from both UVA and UVB rays. It’s also lightweight and comfortable, adding a light layer of hydration to your face. Best part? No pesky whitecast!

We hope this guide helps you start your skincare journey! This 4-step routine just covers the basics! Once you’re happy with this routine, that’s the time where you slowly add products for your other skincare needs!
