In recent years, in some socialist countries of Eastern Europe — Yugoslavia, Hungary, Poland and the USSR — completely different "new approaches" to the definition of elements of socialism have appeared. Unfortunately, these approaches do not lead to satisfactory conclusions. Everyone agrees that formalistic constructions that go so far are not suitable as the basis of an economic system that would be internally humanistic and capable of working economically efficiently. During the current, extremely important stage of the discussion, the most honest participants in it seem to be those who admit: "Today we do not know what socialism is."

This discussion, crucial for the movement towards greater freedom not only in socialist countries, but throughout the world, called into question the assumption that public ownership of the means of production is a necessary prerequisite for "socialism", which was an unchangeable dogma in the past. The pluralistic concept of socialism, which leaves considerable room for private ownership of the means of production, is now being actively defended and discussed. This process was the result of the realization that the functional shortcomings of socialism in its existing form stem not only from the system of centralized planning, but also from public ownership of the means of production. As noted above, such an approach to analysis is very important in order to create a new concept of a socialist system that would simultaneously be socially oriented and economically efficient. However, based on the current level of discussion of this problem, the existing definition of "socialism" is extremely unclear and open to discussion. From the point of view of social development, such discussions are very useful and positive, but at the same time mean that the concept of a "socialist market economy" is very vague or even has no generally recognized meaning. This, of course, does not deny that sometime in the future a clear definition of socialism will be found as an economic system compatible with a market coordination mechanism. However, currently there is no such concept, and the term "socialist market economy" does not contain any specific components and cannot be considered seriously from a scientific point of view. For some researchers, this may be a kind of myth that has little value for an understandable explanation of the existing reality.
